Alexander "Alex" Robert Hirsch is an American animator, storyboard artist, producer, writer, and voice actor known for being the creator, executive producer, and director of the Disney Channel animated series Gravity Falls. He is also known for playing the roles of Grunkle Stan, Soos, and various other characters in his show.

In Star vs. the Forces of Evil, he voices Ben Fotino in the episode "Booth Buddies".

Early life

Hirsch was born in Piedmont, California in 1985. He graduated from Piedmont High School where, as a junior, he won the school's annual Bird Calling Contest in 2002 and appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Hirsch went on to attend the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) where he created a variety of projects and short films including his senior film, "Off The Wall", which combined animation and live action. He also spent the summer of 2006 working in Portland, Oregon on a later-scrapped animated film for Laika. He graduated from the college in 2007.

Career

After graduating from CalArts, Hirsch got a job as a writer and storyboard artist for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack at Cartoon Network, where he worked alongside fellow CalArts alumni, J.G. Quintel, Pendleton Ward, and Pat McHale. He would later work on pilot for Disney Channel's Fish Hooks, along with Maxwell Atoms and Justin Roiland.

Later in 2012, Hirsch created Gravity Falls for Disney Channel and then later moved to Disney XD. It would go on to win a BAFTA Children's Award and an Annie Award in 2015 and was nominated for several other awards (including a Peabody Award in 2016). Throughout the series, Hirsch provided the voices of many various of characters in the show, including Grunkle Stan, Soos, Old Man McGucket, Bill Cipher, and many other minor characters. The show ended on February 2016, as to Hirsch went to pursue other projects.

In other animation, Hirsch has voiced incidental characters on Phineas and Ferb, Rick and Morty, and more. He has also served as story contributor for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Trivia

  • Hirsch sang the Star vs. the Forces of Evil theme song in his Grunkle Stan voice on April 1, 2018 (April Fool's Day).
