Brian Hyunjoon Kim[1] is a composer for film, television, and multimedia, based in Los Angeles, CA. He is the series composer for Star vs. the Forces of Evil.

Early life

Kim grew up in Syracuse, New York. He went to high school at Christian Brothers Academy and graduated from Yale University with a degree in Music.

Kim moved to Washington D.C. to teach music. In 2007, he moved to Los Angeles to attend a film scoring program at the University of Southern California. After his time at USC, he was assistant to composer John Swihart on many projects such as How I Met Your Mother and Switched at Birth. Kim has composed other projects like Grounded, G.B.F., Hello, My Name is Doris, and Search Party. In 2014, Kim got hired as the composer for Star vs. the Forces of Evil after a blind audition against several other composers.[2]

  • Kim usually takes about three days to two weeks to compose the score for each episode.[3]
  • According to Dominic Bisignano, Kim takes his and Aaron Hammersley's custom sounds from a microKORG to create the magic sounds for the show, such as the wand blasts, glows, hums, and spells.[4]
