Jennifer Sarah "Jenny" Slate is an American actress, stand-up comedian, and author best known as the creator of the Marcel the Shell With Shoes On short films.

She voices Pony Head in Star vs. the Forces of Evil.

Early life[]

Slate was born in Milton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Nancy Gilson, a ceramicist, and Ron Slate, a Massachusetts-based poet and author. She is the middle child of two sisters, Abigail and Stacey. They were raised Jewish. After graduating from Milton Academy as the valedictorian, she attended Columbia University as a literature major, where she helped form the improv group Fruit Paunch, starred in the Varsity Show, and met comedy partner Gabe Liedman. Slate graduated from Columbia University in 2004.

Career[]

Alongside Gabe Liedman, Slate is half of the comedy duo Gabe & Jenny. Their live stand-up shows with Max Silvestri, titled Big Terrific was named best new variety show of 2008 by Time Out New York. She is also known for her season as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2009 to 2010, as well as for her recurring roles on House of Lies, Parks and Recreation, Bob's Burgers, and Kroll Show.

In August 2010, Slate co-wrote and voiced Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which garnered viral success. Slate also wrote a "Marcel"-themed children's book that was released on November 1, 2011. Her first major film role was as Zoe in Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked; more films followed in 2012, including the voice of Ted's mother in The Lorax.

Slate recently starred in the 2014 Sundance film Obvious Child and as Dawn Bellwether in the 2016 Disney film Zootopia, and she currently co-stars in the FX comedy series Married. She has also appeared in 2022 commercials for AHA-brand soda water.
