Oh, I'm always mad. But I'm happy that you're safe.
―Moon Butterfly, to Star[src]

Moon Butterfly, also known as Moon the Undaunted, is the 36th Queen of the Kingdom of Mewni,[6] ruling alongside her husband River Butterfly, and the mother of Star Butterfly. She was the previous wielder of the Royal Magic Wand before passing it down to her daughter on her fourteenth birthday.

As of season 4, Moon is no longer queen of Mewni, the throne having been passed from Star to Eclipsa Butterfly, and much of her memory is in fragments as a result of exposure to the Realm of Magic (though it seems to be fully restored by "Ghost of Butterfly Castle").

As of "Moon Remembers", she and River have left the kingdom to start a new life and formed a community of Mewman refugees.

In "Pizza Party", she regains the wand and the title of queen from Eclipsa, but after the age of queens and magic came to an end in "Cleaved", she, once again, is no longer queen.

Appearance[]

Moon Butterfly has long pale blue hair, light blue eyes, and heliotrope pink-colored diamonds on her cheeks. Moon also uses magenta pink lipstick. She stands at a height of 5' 7" (1.7 m).[6] As of "Cleaved", Moon no longer has cheek marks.

During her time as the Queen of Mewni, she wears her hair up in a big, heart-shaped updo, and she has a golden crown with a purple diamond in the center. In season 1, she has hair curls obscuring her ears. She wears a light blue, periwinkle, and white gown, the skirt somewhat resembling the shape of a heart, with long blue gloves. She also wears light blue and periwinkle lace-up boots under her dress.

From "Mr. Candle Cares" onward, Moon's look is altered slightly; Her crown now has a gold diamond-shaped attachment with a purple diamond in the center, from which two strings of pearls curl around the sides of her hair. Her hair curls are gone, meaning her ears are now visible, and she wears gold diamond-shaped earrings with purple diamonds embedded in them.

In "Face the Music", it is revealed that Moon's hair, when worn completely down, looks just like Star's. In other appearances, however, it appears thicker and messier than Star's, and her bangs do not show. In "Divide" and "Conquer", her hair is thick enough to cover her naked body down to her knees.

In her mewberty form, Moon has periwinkle skin, and her hair becomes a slightly darker shade of light blue. She gains two additional sets of arms, longer diamond-tipped eyelashes, large blue butterfly wings with diamond-tipped "feelers" on the bottom, and diamond-tipped antennae on her head.

In "Into the Wand", Deep Trouble Issue #2, and "Moon the Undaunted", young Moon bears a strong resemblance to her daughter Star, with long hair that reaches down to her knees and three bangs in front that point upward and overlap her eyes. The difference in their hairstyle is that young Moon had two long straight strands that would hang in front of her ears.

As a teenage girl in "Moon the Undaunted", Moon wears battle armor that consists of a dark gray sleeveless top that appears to be metal, a gray belt with a silver diamond in the center, a lighter gray knee-length plated skirt with diamond edges on the bottom, and white wing-like shoulder pads. She also wears gray boots with white tips, and a tall crown with a pink diamond encrusted in the center.

She wears this outfit in "Face the Music", "Starcrushed", Star vs. the Forces of Evil: The Battle for Mewni, and "Tough Love", but with white long-sleeved gauntlets and a bejeweled tiara instead of a crown. She also keeps her hair in a long braid.

From "Toffee" until "Divide", Moon's hands are stained dark purple with matching veins sprouting out on her arms from using dark magic. As a result, from "Scent of a Hoodie" to "Tough Love" she wears longer gloves that cover almost her entire arms. After being attacked and put in a vulnerable state by Meteora, Moon’s left eye becomes completely black. She escapes to the Realm of Magic, and the golden water heals the veins on her arms and her eye.

In "Escape from the Pie Folk", the amnesiac Moon wears a baker's outfit, consisting of a pink, short dress with short sleeves, a white apron (with the ribbons tied in a butterfly shape), pink flats, and wears her hair in a bun with her bangs braided to somewhat resemble a pie crust.

As of "Moon Remembers", Moon wears her hair in a long braid and wears an ankle length, short-sleeved sky blue dress with a pale periwinkle shirt underneath, and blue flats.

Personality[]

Moon Butterfly is serious most of the time, having a low tolerance for anything messy or destructive. In "Royal Pain", she was said to have kicked her husband out of the castle for not cleaning up his messes. Moon often regards safety and caution for Star as shown most prominently in Star vs. the Forces of Evil: The Battle for Mewni when they were forced on the run from Toffee.

Being the queen, Moon acts as the true ruling monarch of Mewni and always has the well-being of her kingdom in mind, to the point she is unable to express interest in anything else. This often causes her to appear cold and even somewhat authoritarian towards others. Despite her overbearing strictness, she truly cares for her daughter; after the near loss of the family wand, rather than show any anger or disappointment, she hugs Star, telling her daughter that she's just glad she's safe. Her concern for Star is also demonstrated in "Toffee" when she attacks Toffee for presumably killing Star.

In "Puddle Defender" and "Total Eclipsa the Moon", she demonstrates that she is willing to have an open mind about those toward whom she has preconceived misconceptions, such as monsters and Eclipsa. She is even more tolerant of monsters in "Moon Remembers" and promises not to harm them after reclaiming the throne in "Pizza Party", even showing anger when Mina vows to kill all monsters.

In Star vs. the Forces of Evil: The Battle for Mewni, Moon claimed that, like Star, she used to be a "happy go-lucky girl" during her youth, but after Toffee and his army killed her mother and she inherited the throne, she became serious and mature to protect her kingdom and family. However, she sometimes shows signs of fear and nervousness, such as when meeting Eclipsa for the first time and when she first casts her darkest spell. On the other hand, after her first meeting with Eclipsa, she questioned whether she was truly evil. However, she once again came to believe in these misconceptions over time and her fear of Eclipsa possibly escaping is on full display in "Toffee".

In "Escape from the Pie Folk" and "Moon Remembers", Moon has some moments of childishness as a result of her memory loss, abandoning her post as Pie Island chef to sing songs with Star and engaging in childlike activity such as foot races.

After "Moon Remembers", she tried to let go of her role as queen and start over. In "Ghost of Butterfly Castle" and Cornonation" she showed progress by refusing to be her peoples' problem solver and instead encouraged them to think for themselves. Unfortunately, by leading a coup against Eclipsa in "Pizza Party", Moon showed she is ultimately unable to let go, even relying on petty excuses to justify herself. However, in "The Tavern at the End of the Multiverse", after being betrayed by Mina, Moon seems to have finally realized that her preconceived beliefs are fundamentally wrong and now displays shame towards her previous actions. This ultimately led her to agree with Star in "Cleaved" about magic needing to be destroyed and even helped her accomplish the endeavor. Afterwards, Moon finally seems to have learned to be moderate by agreeing to teach her people self-defense, allowing her to maintain some oversight while not being in direct control.

Relationships[]

Star Butterfly[]

S2E15 Queen Butterfly kneels down to Star

Moon complimenting her daughter on her maturity.

Moon is initially a very strict and stubborn authoritarian figure in Star's life. She agreed with her husband to send Star to Earth to train, but she puts her under the constant threat that if she misbehaves she'll be sent to St. Olga's Reform School for Wayward Princesses. She demands that Star follows in her footsteps as queen and follow the customs and traditions of her kingdom and expects nothing less but compliance from Star. In "Sleep Spells", Moon calls Star for her "daily reminder to behave like the queen-in-training" that she is. Her overbearing attitude towards Star and the pressure she puts on her leads Marco to state that Star has "mother issues".

However, Moon does deeply care for and love her daughter and even worries about her, with her overbearing nature stemming from her own short-lived relationship with her mother, to the point where Star did not know about her grandmother's fate until her teen years. In "Storm the Castle", she was not angry at Star for almost destroying the wand, she was just glad she was safe, but after Star leaves she tells her husband that she's not sure if they did the right thing by sending Star to Earth. In "Game of Flags", after hearing Star's reasons for running the Game of Flags against her wishes, Moon admits that she misjudged Star and that she is the perfect blend between the Butterflys and Johansens. In "Page Turner", Glossaryck questions her approach to being a parent. In "Face the Music", Moon admits to Star that she can be strict with her sometimes but is nonetheless very proud of her and how far she's come with her magic. Earlier in the same episode, Moon tells Lady Avarius that mothers cannot always control the path their children take, once again demonstrating how accepting of Star Moon has become.

After Star loses her spell book and Glossaryck when Ludo steals them, Moon considers having Star come back home to Mewni, and she is shocked when she learns that Star is extremely advanced in her magic, something that her godmother Baby has not seen since Queen Eclipsa (Star's perceived sixth great-grandmother who ran off with a monster). In "Starcrushed", due to the looming threat of Toffee, Moon tells Star they must leave for Mewni, and, after Star learns that Toffee has returned, agrees. Despite becoming accepting and proud of Star, she will not hesitate to be strict toward Star in order to keep her safe.

Moon later grows to trust Star more as the series progresses; she makes an ally out of Buff Frog at Star's insistence, despite her strong prejudice against monsters as a result of her own upbringing. At one point, she also willingly hands over Toffee's severed finger to get Star back from him.

When it appears as if Star is dead, Moon furiously attacks Toffee, even trying to use her "darkest spell" while aiming at his heart. After Toffee dismisses her efforts, Moon desperately tries to reassemble the wand's fragments, hoping vainly that it will bring Star back. After Star returns and defeats Toffee, Moon is overjoyed and hugs her, calling her "my baby".

In "Starfari", it is shown that she and Star still don't see eye to eye on some matters, as seen when they argue over what does and does not make someone a monster. She is also angry with Star in "The Bogbeast of Boggabah" over the party she threw at the monster temple, and dismisses her claims that Miss Heinous is Eclipsa's daughter.

However, in "Butterfly Trap", she tries to console Star when Star realizes she, and anyone else who ruled after Eclipsa, isn't a real Butterfly. In "Divide" and "Conquer", Star tries to rescue Moon from the Realm of Magic, where she has lost her memories. However, Star loses her memory as well, and the two have fun throughout the realm and explore the different worlds the waterfalls take them to before the Firstborn banishes them. Throughout season 4, Moon is more open with how much she loves and cares for Star after she is rescued from Pie Island.

In "Pizza Party", when Moon reveals that she is conspiring with Mina to remove Eclipsa from power, Star calls her a traitor and even attacks her out of anger, creating a whole new strained relationship between them. Even after Moon is betrayed by Mina, as of "The Tavern at the End of the Multiverse", Star still does not forgive her mother. In fact, their relationship only worsens, with Star telling Moon she should go beyond the borders of reality, where she would cease to exist, a swear that deeply hurts Moon.

In "Cleaved", Moon works together with Star to destroy all magic, and when Star decides to leave Mewni and go to Earth, Moon cries out to her in tears. In the end, Moon expresses how deeply sorry she is for everything, and Star forgives her, hoping to create a new age without magic where "moms mess up" and make up for them.

River Butterfly[]

S2E40 Queen Moon kisses River on the cheek

Moon giving River a farewell kiss.

Like Star, Moon does not tolerate River's messiness or destructiveness. In "Royal Pain" she kicked him out of the castle just because of him not cleaning up his messes. In "Storm the Castle", it is revealed that River's teeth tend to whistle whenever he says a word with an "S" in it. Moon is greatly annoyed by this and she tells River: "I love you honey, I just can't deal with that today." However, she still greatly loves her husband, despite that her family despises River's family, who are barbaric and messy like him.

In "Face the Music", River worries about Moon going to the Forest of Certain Death, but Moon assures him she will be fine, and kisses him before she leaves.

In "Moon the Undaunted", which shows Moon and River in their teen years, young River has a crush on Moon, but he acts nervous around her. When River tries to stand up for Moon in the war meeting, Moon smiles at him. She later thanks him for believing in her and hugs him after her confrontation with Toffee.

As shown in "Marco and the King", Moon leaves an outfit out for him each day every time she has to leave the castle for an extended period of time. In "Puddle Defender", despite not returning to the castle for her husband at Star's insistence, she expresses her immense worry for him to Buff Frog.

In "Moon Remembers", Moon is particularly warm toward River, wanting to walk with him and race him to the Monster Temple and spend alone time with him at the end of the episode.

Toffee[]

S2E23 Moon Butterfly's Tapestry

Younger Moon fighting Toffee.

Moon and Toffee's relationship is first hinted at in "Fortune Cookies" and "Storm the Castle" when Toffee reveals his knowledge of the Whispering Spell. It is revealed in "Into the Wand" that Moon fought Toffee when she was younger and used her "darkest spell" to permanently sever the middle finger on his right hand. The two meet and do battle again in "Starcrushed", after Toffee possesses Ludo's body. Moon ultimately loses, and before she leaves, Toffee says "Tell Star I'm coming for my finger". After this, Moon forces Star to leave Earth for Mewni, showing that she fears Toffee and sees him as a true threat.

In "Return to Mewni", it is revealed that Toffee killed Moon's mother. This event, as further explored in "Moon the Undaunted", forced a teenage Moon to make a deal with Eclipsa in order to defeat Toffee and caused her to drop her original "happy-go-lucky" personality, beginning Moon's lifelong grudge against Toffee and vice-versa.

Eclipsa Butterfly[]

S3E2 Eclipsa 'aim it directly at his heart'

Moon negotiating with Eclipsa.

Moon and Eclipsa's relationship is first explored in "Moon the Undaunted". Like the rest of the Magic High Commission, Moon views Eclipsa and her magic as extremely dangerous. However, she is willing to turn to Eclipsa for help out of desperation to end the war between Mewmans and monsters. Despite the deal made between them, Moon desires for Eclipsa to remain frozen in "Toffee". When Eclipsa is freed in "Stranger Danger", Moon doesn't hesitate to apprehend her and see to her immediate re-crystallization before Star gets involved.

In "Total Eclipsa the Moon", Moon is still distrustful of Eclipsa but once again finds herself turning to her for help when trying to solve a mystery surrounding the Butterfly family. With Eclipsa's help, Moon finds some answers in the Bureaucracy of Magic's royal archive, and at the end of the episode, she sympathizes with Eclipsa's desire to see her daughter again. In "Butterfly Trap", she works with her and Star to uncover the truth about Meteora. In "Tough Love", Eclipsa helps her track down Meteora so they can bring her home peacefully. However, the two later came to blows when Eclipsa interfered in her fight with Meteora, resulting in Moon subsequently being lost in the Realm of Magic.

In "Moon Remembers", the two reunite after Moon's absence, and seem to get along quite well. However, Moon chooses to depart soon after, admitting to Star that she still doesn't trust Eclipsa. In "Ghost of Butterfly Castle", Moon decides not to bother warning Eclipsa about Mina Loveberry, saying Eclipsa is the queen now and will have to handle it herself. In "Cornonation", Moon, despite still not fully trusting Eclipsa, refuses to voice any deciding opinion about her and tells the Mewmans to decide for themselves whether or not Eclipsa could be trusted.

However, in "Here to Help" and "The Tavern at the End of the Multiverse", Moon reveals she conspired with Mina Loveberry to dethrone Eclipsa and was the true mastermind behind the events of "Cornonation". Though Moon's reason for doing so is to keep Mina under control, she admits that she blames Eclipsa for the events of "Tough Love". After Moon is betrayed by Mina, Eclipsa convinces her not to dwell on it and that they have to return to Mewni to stop her, showing that the friendship the two had built had not yet been fully destroyed. She eventually overcomes her distrust toward Eclipsa and works with her to help Star destroy magic in "Cleaved".

Mina Loveberry[]

S4E15 Moon commends Mina for her service

Moon and Mina Loveberry.

In "Moon the Undaunted", it is revealed that Moon has known Mina since when she was an adolescent. Back then, Moon could keep Mina's temper and impulsiveness in check. However, as in "Ghost of Butterfly Castle", Moon is unable to dissuade Mina due to her increasingly unstable mentality, but she still chooses to conspire with Mina to remove Eclipsa from the throne in "Here to Help" and "Pizza Party", only to be betrayed by Mina in the end.

After the events of "Cleaved", Moon still attempts to convince Mina to change her ways and get help, but Mina refuses to accept her advice and ultimately abandons Moon.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Royal Magic Wand: Moon Butterfly was once the owner of the royal magic wand, and she once used it to permanently sever one of Toffee's fingers.
  • Mewberty form: Moon can change into her Mewberty form at will. She has blue skin, six arms, and large butterfly wings capable of flight.
  • Inherent magic: As a queen of Mewni, Moon has magic deep within her body that she can access by "dipping down". With this reservoir of magic power, she can fire energy from her hands and create magical constructs such as whips, barriers and energy swords.
  • Swordsmanship: Moon has proven to be proficient with both regular swords and energy swords created with her magic.
  • Telekinesis: In "The Bogbeast of Boggabah", Moon levitates Star off the ground. In "Tough Love", she levitates mud and large boulders.
  • Baking: "Butterfly Follies" and "Escape from the Pie Folk" show that Moon has a talent for making pies.

  • "Moon the Undaunted" revealed that Moon became queen when she was not much older than Star, due to her mother being killed by Toffee and his army of rogue monsters.
    • "Moon the Undaunted" also revealed that she has had dark veins on her arms (similar to Eclipsa's) ever since casting the 'darkest spell' to defeat Toffee.
  • In "Game of Flags", it is revealed that Moon is the only member of the royal family willing to tolerate the rambunctiousness of the Johansen family, as a result of her marriage to River Johansen, who would become King Butterfly. The rest of the family openly disapproves of their marriage, and often chastises her for their union.
  • When Moon was a princess, she wore the same crown that Star now owns and wears on special occasions.

    • "Stump Day" reveals she also wears her hair down to sleep, and it appears wavy and messier, and her bangs do not show.
  • According to Star and Marco's Guide to Mastering Every Dimension, Moon took a pole dancing class at one point in her life. She kept the boots for her regular attire.
  • Moon is the only Butterfly family member to be shown in two tapestries: her mother's, and her own.
  • According to Dominic Bisignano, Moon was born on the 1st Corn of Diamond.[12]
  • Moon was the second known queen to begin her reign at the age of 17, the first known queen being Skywynne Butterfly (though Skywynne took the throne as a result of her mother stepping down out of boredom).
  • According to a Q&A session with the show creators, when asked what the main characters are doing since the series ended, they said that Moon is still leading the Mewmans but also reflecting.[13]
