Spider With a Top Hat is one of Star Butterfly's summoning spells and magical friends in Star vs. the Forces of Evil. He is an entertainment spell who dreams of becoming a fighting spell.
Appearance[]
As his name suggests, Spider With a Top Hat is a black-mustached spider who uses two of his legs as arms and the remaining six for walking. He wears a tall black top hat and white gloves. Spider sometimes appears with blue and pink skin, but in his most prominent appearance to date, his skin is purple.
Personality[]
As an entertainment spell, Spider With a Top Hat is very cheerful, comical, and optimistic. He enjoys making his fellow spells smile and laugh with his antics and jokes. Because of his dream to be a warrior spell, Spider is also very determined and self-confident. While he is happy to be an entertainment spell, his fighting dreams drive him forward, causing him to be easily crushed when he fails.
History[]
Spider With a Top Hat first makes a cameo appearance (with pink skin) in "The Other Exchange Student" when Star Butterfly demonstrates for Marco Diaz that she can make things just as impressively as Gustav. He also appears walking alongside Star in the ending credits sequence (with blue skin) in season 1 and 2.
In his titular season 2 episode, Spider With a Top Hat appears as Star's most entertaining magic spell. His role is to entertain Star's other spells with refreshments, comedy, and dancing after each monster battle and keep up their morale. However, Spider secretly dreams of being a strong warrior spell like Narwhal Blast and Warnicorn Stampede.
Spider tries to prove his strength and warrior spirit by repeatedly throwing himself against his bedroom wall, crying out "Spider With a Top Hat Blast!", in an attempt to break it, and he tries lifting weights with the Warnicorns. Unfortunately, he fails at both of these.
One day, however, Spider succeeds in proving himself by fending off a giant monster with the laser-shooting minigun concealed in his top hat, earning him the respect of his fellow spells. This is eventually revealed to be a dream that Spider had while sleeping, and his self-confidence is restored.
In "Monster Bash", Star finally summons Spider With a Top Hat to fight for the first time against Mina Loveberry, but his laser cannon is ineffective against her.
In "Holiday Spellcial", Spider holds a Stump Day office party in the wand for Star's other spells and invites All-Seeing Eye, much to the discomfort of the other spells.
During the party, All-Seeing Eye reveals some of the spells embarrassing secrets with his spy recordings, causing the spells to get mad at him and each other. When Spider asks Seeing Eye why he's doing this, Seeing Eye expresses (through a recording of Marco and Jackie) that it's always best to tell the truth. As Seeing Eye floats away to try and mingle some more, Spider vents his frustration about the other spells to Narwhal, unaware that Seeing Eye is observing and recording him.
When Spider With a Top Hat later gives a heartfelt speech about holiday togetherness during the big Stump Day feast, the spells forgive each other and make a toast to Spider. However, when Seeing Eye plays the recording of Spider venting his frustration about the other spells, they turn on him and leave to their individual rooms. Spider loses his temper at Seeing Eye, and despite Seeing Eye's values of complete honesty, Spider tells him off and walks away.
In his solitude, All-Seeing Eye starts playing recordings of the other spells being friendly and kind to one another. This brings the spells out of their rooms as they reminisce on the happy memories they've shared. For reminding them of the friendship and love between them, the other spells accept Seeing Eye as one of their own, and Spider forgives him for his earlier actions.
In "Divide", Star uses Spider in a sparring match against Marco. Using his sword, Marco is able to deflect every one of Spider's attacks, with his laser cannon eventually running down.
In "A Spell with No Name", Spider holds a pancake party for the rest of Star's spells, but Eclipsa's spells crash the party in search of a rogue spell on the loose. During the ensuing confrontation, Spider gets hit with Low Self-Esteem Nightmare Dream, and spends the rest of the episode focusing on his flaws.
