So I'm new to the wiki, and honestly the show too. I only began watching after hearing talks that it exists in the same reality as Gravity Falls, and so I decided to give it a shot. Not even a week later, and I'm already caught up. I wasn't at all expecting to love the show nearly as much as I did. Now, I'm here to discus the aforementioned connections to Gravity Falls, and further on the show's connection to Rick and Morty, and my theory on why all three shows exist not just in a shared multiverse, but all are in the same universe, at least for a time.
The connections between the shows[]
Below are the connections I picked up on in the show. There may be more I missed, but these are just my best guesses.
Between Gravity Falls and Rick and Morty[]
- In the episode "Big Trouble in Little Sanchez," a picture of Bill Cipher is seen on a monitor.
- In the canon real life Journal 3, there is a page detailing ghosts that travel through dreams, calling them "Dream Hipsters." The description given on them seemingly fits the character Scary Terry.
- Additionally in Journal 3, pictures appear of a Plumbus, a Zigerion, and Cthulhu (who was seen in the Rick and Morty theme).
- Once again in Journal 3, Ford mentions getting in an argument with a couch person matching the description of a furnature universe in "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind."
- In the episode "Society of the Blind Eye," Stan's mug, pen, and notebook are sucked into a portal, and later are seen falling through a portal in the episode "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind."
- A skeleton of the character 8 Ball was seen in the episode "Rest and Ricklaxation."
- In the episode "Morty's Mind Blowers" there are two vials labeled "Bill C." and "Stanford," possible references to Bill Cipher and Stanford Pines.
- A background character wearing rainbow suspenders and a tan shirt with a football on it appeared in the background of both shows. (Note: This character was originally intended to appear on the show Murder Police also, however as this never happened, the show stayed seperate).
Between Gravity Falls and Star vs. the Forces of Evil[]
- In the episode "Starstruck," the tourists that appear are the exact same group of tourists in the episode "Tourist Trapped."
- The gnomes seen in the episode "Trial by Squire" are in the same animation style as, and almost look identical to, the gnomes in Gravity Falls.
- A background character in the episode "Camping Trip" is believed by many fans to be Soos Remirez.
- The logo for the band Sev'ral Timez is seen in Marco's locker.
Between Rick and Morty and Star vs. the Forces of Evil[]
- In the episode "Mathmagic," a pizza version of Star is seen as existing in an alternate dimension. A pizza universe was seen in the episode "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind."
Order of events[]
SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL THREE SHOWS
Now, if I had to guess the best way to watch these? My guess would be:
The destruction of a dimension[]
- Rick and Morty episodes 1-6
These episodes all take place in Earth Dimension C-137. These episodes stand conpletely independant of ties to other shows simply because, well, they're set in a seperate universe from the rest of the shows. However, in the sixth episode, the titular characters accidentally destroy their whole universe, and the two hop to an un-specified dimension where the Earth is fine.
Speculation: The dimension they go to is Earth Dimension 46'\ which is the universe Gravity Falls is set in. After this every episode is set mainly in one dimension.
A new dimension[]
- Rick and Morty episodes 7-9
Finishing out the school year, Morty adjusts to living in a new dimension. Rick and Morty continue going on adventures while the school year finishes, and Morty opens up to his sister about having been from another dimension.
Chaotic summer[]
- Gravity Falls episodes 1-27
- Rick and Morty episodes 10
- Gravity Falls episode 28-40
- Rick and Morty episodes 11-12
Dipper and Mable begin their summer in Gravity Falls, and while there, Dipper finds Journal 3. Meanwhile, Rick is blamed for the deaths of several of his alternate selves, and manages to make a case of innocense.
After discovering various weird creatures, Dipper eventually finds out the author of the Journal is Ford Pines, his uncle who had been stuck in an alternate dimension, unable to come back. Eventually, Bill Cipher, an evil dream demon from another dimension, takes control of Gravity Falls, starting Weirdmageddon, however Dipper and Mable manage to stop him before he can spread it to the rest of the world.
After a party, Rick freezes all of the dimensions time for months, eventually resuming it.
The Galactic Federation[]
- Rick and Morty episodes 13-22
Rick and Morty get back to their normal routine of going on random adventures. While at Birdperson's wedding, the Galactic Federation kills Birdperson and eventually, Rick turns himself in. The Federation begins to allow aliens to freely travel in and out of the federation, and begins to work on getting the secret to interdimensional travel out of Rick, who refuses. Eventually, he escapes and collapses the federation, causing most of the aliens to retreat off of Earth.
From another dimension[]
- Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Rick and Morty occur at the same time now, the remaining episodes I would just say in airing order.
Rick and Morty, once again, return to their normal formula. Meanwhile on Mewni, a dimension where interdimensional travel is common, Princess Star Butterfly is sent to live on Earth due to her recless behavior.
Final thoughts and notes[]
Overall, I think these three shows existing in one reality would make sense. Rick and Morty's random weird-ness seems to fit well with Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and all three shows seem to deal with interdimensional travel. The reasoning for why I set the timeline of events the way I did was because the mug, pen, and noptebook coming through the portal implys "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind" occurs in the same summer as all of Gravity Falls, and as for starting Star vs so late in the timeline, it was simply because if Star came to the same version of Earth where they had been perviously aware of other dimensions and aliens, etc, it would explain why nobody finds Star's abilities overly weird.
